When you set a new goal, do you tell everyone and anyone about it?
Or do you wait until you've actually accomplished it to share it with others?
If you have a tendency to fall through on your goals, it might be a good idea to wait on sharing your goals. Because it could be hindering your success and hurting your confidence at the same time.
Why It's A Good Idea Not To Share Your Goals
1. There's a chance you won't follow through.
there's always that initial rush after setting a new goal.
Y'know what I'm talking about, right?
You set a new goal and you're filling pumped about it.
You have it all planned out and you're ready to go all in.
But before you go posting about it to Facebook or text messaging every last friend about it, give yourself some time to settle down. Sleep it over, let yourself process through it, work on the goal for at least a week, and reflect on it.
Because sometimes, the goal we set doesn't turn out the way we expected it to.
Maybe your goal is to go on FB live every day for a whole month (and this is a real life example of my own).
In all honesty, it wasn't a good time to set that goal (and I kind of knew it too).
I already had a lot of things on my plate, and I was adding something completely new on my list of things to do. I even created 4 different calendars for myself, and that's on top of my main planner.
After 4 days, I realized I couldn't keep up wish it anymore.
What I learned from that experience: Be more patient and think things through.
In this day and age, it's easy to want to have results instantly.
But that's not how goals work.
You don't just set a goal and expect yourself to accomplish everything by the next day.
It's about showing up consistently and doing the work, so make sure you're actually up for doing the work.
2. We're seeking for outside validation.
For someone to tell us "good job" without actually doing any of the work yet.
And that's a recipe for disaster, because if you're doing things for other people, you're not going to do it for long.
It needs to be for you.
How is this goal going to make your life better? How is going to make you better?
Don't build the habit of doing things to please other people. Or to "prove yourself", because it only leads to more problems down the line.
- You become impatient and give up too easily. If something doesn't work out after 10 days, you quit and you say "It doesn't work". (It works if you work it.)
- You end up feeling stressed and anxious about it later on because you told someone you were going to do something and now you don't want to do it anymore. You don't want to be known as unreliable and untrustworthy.
Follow through on what you say you're going to do.
Or don't say it at all.
At the end of the day, actions speak louder than words.
3. Show. Don't tell.
If you're committed to making it happen, then it's going to happen.
And eventually, people are going to take notice.
But don't set with the intention of "proving yourself" to other people.
Life isn't a competition or a race you have to win.
It's not about being better. It's about living a life that feels you happy to be alive.
Because if your life is making you miserable, than what's the point?
If the goals you set for yourself are going to make you miserable, why do them?
And if you keep them to yourself and you find out after a week or two that it's not for you, you don't have to keep doing them. And no one is going to think you're unreliable, because you didn't tell anyone about them.
At the end of the day, you have the ability to change your life.
And you have more potential than you think.
And it's up to you to step up to the plate and make it happen.
So instead of telling everyone you're going to make it happen, just make it happen.
