Have you ever wanted to unfollow someone, but worried it might be awkward?

Or maybe you didn't want to come off as a mean person.

You just want to make everyone happy, but... that doesn't make you happy.

But sometimes, you need to unfollow people. Maybe for your own mental health, for clarity, or it could be as simple as you not enjoying someone's content anymore.

Either way, remember that it's your choice whether you follow or unfollow someone on Instagram.

3 Reasons Why It's Okay To Unfollow People On Instagram

1. Their content doesn't interest you anymore.

Sometimes, we change and our interests change. Other times, other people change.

If you're not feeling someone else's content anymore, you're not obligated to follow them.

As a recovering people pleaser, this can be hard. And I know a lot of people track who follows and unfollows them, but ultimately, if you don't like someone's content, why keep them on your feed? It's one more photo you have to scroll past to see the content you do want and those you do feel aligned with.

And while one photo might not seem that bad, imagine following 50 people whom you don't enjoy having on your feed anymore.

There's enough noise out there - why add to it ourselves?

2. Their content makes you feel negative, jealous, etc.

Jealousy doesn't look good on anyone, and it's already soooo easy to fall into the comparison trap - so why do we make it harder on ourselves?

At first, it felt pretty weird unfollowing people on Instagram and unfriending people on Facebook. You might even feel a withdraw, but if you stick with it, not seeing them on your feed becomes the new normal.

You get to choose who shows up in your life and it might mean unfollowing someone on Instagram, unsubscribing from a newsletter, or deleting an app.

The thoughts we allow into our mind (and that includes other people's thoughts as well) impacts how we feel about ourselves and our actions.

If you want to feel differently, then you have to do something differently.

3. It feels like too much noise and clutter.

We're already bombarded with so much the minute we wake up, especially if the first thing we check in the morning is our phone - so why add onto that?

"What we think, we become."

There's one thing I know for sure: It's really hard to listen to your intuition and find clarity when you're constantly consuming other people's messages, opinions, thoughts, emotions, and feelings.

So if you feel like someone is constantly raining on your parade, unfollow them!

But know that it's a two way street. Other people can and will unfollow you too (and that's okay!).

No one is everyone's cup of tea.

At the end of the day, it's your life and you can do whatever you want with it.

Do what feels good to you, and don't worry so much about what everyone else is doing or thinking.

You aren't responsible for how other people feel, do or do not. That doesn't mean be a jerk, but you are allowed to put your own feelings and mental health first. And so if that means unfollowing someone on Instagram, then it's your choice to do it.
