Anyone who knows me knows I’m not the type of person to ask for help. Something I’ve been meaning to work on, but admittedly constantly seem to neglect. 

Recently, I’ve learned that it actually feels kind of nice to let someone else to take and do the heavy lifting for a while. Actually, it’s really nice - not just “kind of”. 

At first, I felt guilty - like I should be doing more to “prove my worth”. I’m always trying to prove my worth, but please remember you don't have to prove yourself to anyone. Ever.

If you have trouble accepting help from others and/or asking for help, this post is for you. 

 

3 Reasons Why You Should Let Other People Help You Once In A While

1. If you keep trying to do everything yourself, you’re going to lose your sanity and/or burnout. Whichever comes first. 

If 2017 has been a year of anything, it’s been a year of “Let me see how much I can do in this amount of time to get these results” i.e. neglecting my health and wellbeing, often losing my mind and sanity, and many moments in which I wanted to give up all together. 

Lesson learned: Be more patient, because you have your whole life ahead of you. 

Another lesson learned: If other people offer to help you, take it. You’re not being selfish, lazy, careless, inconsiderate (or any of the other words that might be floating around in your head). 

I grew up with a “figure it out yourself” mentality, but sometimes - it’s really nice having someone else do a bit of the heavy lifting. You don’t have to do everything yourself all the time despite what society may have taught you. After all, they say two brains are better than one. Work as a team.

2. We can’t be good at everything, but we are definitely all good at something. 

Play to your strengths, instead of your weaknesses. 

We all have things we’re good at whether it’s talking to people, creating spreadsheets, writing really good copy, taking photographs, etc. 

If you’re going on a trip with a good of friends and one of them is really good at planning - let them to the planning. If you’re really good at coordination and making sure everyone is at the same place at the same time, then do that. 

It’s like a group project. Don’t make one person do all the work. 

And if you find yourself being that person who is doing all the work without being offered any help, then maybe it’s time to switch teams. 

Because together, we can be stronger, better, and most importantly - we don't have to do it all ourselves. 

 

3. Life is more than one big to do list. 

My recent trip to Europe reminded me that there’s more to life than my to do list, because prior to that, that’s all I was focused on. That’s all I could think about. In fact, that’s all I wanted to think about. 

But you know what that to do list brought me? Lots of stress, anxiety, fear, guilt, etc. i.e. not things you want in your life. 

When all we can focus on is our to do list, we forget to look up. We forget to eat, take care of ourselves, and sometimes even shower ... which tends to make everything worse in the end, doesn't it?

But when you really think about it, life isn’t as serious as your mind makes it up to be. So what if you fail? Get up and try again. 

Trust me, no one is judging you as harshly as you’re judging yourself. We’re often our worst and meanest critics.

I know, it’s annoying to listen to other people’s advice sometimes. Especially when you’re stuck in your own head. (And don’t get me wrong - not all advice is good advice.) 

But sometimes, you need that sane, logical person in your life who cares about you to remind you that there’s more to life than your business, blog, project, idea, etc. 

Let them help you take your head out of the sand, so you can start seeing the sun and start breathing in the fresh air again. 

Because if you’re anything like me ("a bit” controlling with a “I have to get it all done” personality), you need it. You need the fresh air.
